The Newark Police Department Canine Division currently has two canine/handler teams. Both NPD canines are of the Malinois breed and work primarily in patrol.
OFFICER SMITH & K9 TIO
K9 Tio officially joined the Newark Police Department in April 2019. After undergoing extensive training, Officer Smith and K9 Tio began serving the citizens of Newark in June 2019.
Tio is a Belgian Malinois and was born on October 20, 2016. He is currently trained in narcotics and article detection.
This is Officer Smith’s second time as a K9 Officer. He and his previous K9 partner, Henk, patrolled the streets from 2005 to 2012 until Henk retired after seven years of dedicated service.
OFFICER PACHECO & K9 ECHO
K9 Echo officially joined the Newark Police Department in February 2020. After undergoing extensive training, Officer Pacheco and K9 Echo began serving the citizens of Newark in March 2020.
K9 Echo is a Belgian Malinois born on October 12, 2018. He is currently trained in narcotics and article detection.
