Voter Information

The Newark City Council unanimously placed Measure LL – a local hotel tax update - on the ballot for the November General Election for voter consideration.

Measure LL is a proposed 4% increase to the local hotel/lodging tax that is paid by visitors, tourists, and guests who stay in the local hotels and lodging in Newark. Measure LL is not a tax on Newark residents who don’t stay in local hotels/lodging. Newark residents are not taxed, so visitors, tourists, and guests are contributing to the services they utilize.

If enacted, Measure LL would allow Newark to continue to exercise local control over local funds for local needs – allowing the City to be self-reliant.

Measure LL could address resident identified City service funding priorities such as repairing potholes and City streets, maintaining neighborhood police patrols, fire protection and 911 emergency medical response, upgrading fire stations to ensure rapid response times, accommodate modern firefighting and life-saving emergency equipment, improving emergency dispatch for rapid response during an earthquake or major disaster and enhancing parks and recreation programs and maintaining sports fields and children’s play structures.

The City will establish standards of fiscal accountability and transparency by requiring that any expenditure of funds generated by Measure LL be reviewed by an independent tax oversight committee.

Newark voters will also have the opportunity to decide on the City’s next Mayor and two full-term Councilmembers (4 years) and one short term Councilmember (unexpired term, two years) in November.
