Roadway Safety and Power Outages

Natural Gas or Downed Power Line

Downed power line or smell natural gas: leave area immediately and call 9-1-1. Then call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000

Downed power line safety tips:

Never, ever touch a downed power line or go near one. Power lines are not insulated like power cords. Always assume the power line is live.

• Don't touch a downed power line or other equipment.
• Don't touch anything or anyone in contact with a downed power line.
• Keep children and pets away from a downed power line.
• Don't drive over a downed power line.

Flooding and Sandbag Information

For non-emergency flooding issues during normal business hours please contact the City’s Maintenance Division at 510-578-4806.  After hours, please contact the Newark Police Department non-emergency line at 510-578-4237.  For any emergencies, always call 9-1-1.

Residents and businesses can obtain sand and sandbags (while supplies last) during normal business hours at no cost from the City’s Service Center located at 37440 Filbert Street.  Please bring your own shovel and take only up to 10 bags of sand.  For additional information, contact the Newark Service Center at 510-578-4806 or visit the City’s website at Flooding and Sandbags | Newark, CA

What to do before a flood

• Determine if your property is subject to flooding by checking the FEMA website:

  https://msc.fema.gov/portal/home

• Pay attention to local warnings and weather forecasts
• Develop an evacuation plan for your family
• Properly maintain your property and prepare as needed for potential flooding conditions

What to do during a flood

• Tune-in to local radio and television broadcasts and watch for warnings on AC Alert: Emergencies | Alameda County (acgov.org)
• When dangerous flooding conditions are imminent, avoid driving if possible.Never attempt to drive or wade through deep pockets of water, especially fast-moving water.
• Avoid low-lying areas; seek shelter in the highest areas possible

Tree Down

If the downed tree has caused injuries or is causing an immediate danger, dial 9-1-1.

A tree down can be reported directly to the Maintenance Division at 510-578-4806, Mon – Thurs and open Fridays from 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

After hours – please call the police non-emergency dispatch number at 510-578-4237

Please have the following information ready to report:

• The location of the down tree by street address or street and nearest cross street.
• Has the tree fallen on a vehicle or caused any damage to property?
• Is the down tree blocking the traveled way for vehicles?
• Is it blocking a sidewalk?
• The approximate size of the tree; the diameter of the trunk and the height.
• Was the tree hit by a vehicle or does it appear to have fallen due to natural causes?

Lakeshore Park

The lake at Lakeshore Park does act as an important stormwater detention basin and during heavy storm events, the lake water level can rise above the retaining wall and submerge portions of the paved pathway.  The park is designed to accommodate this stormwater runoff from surrounding neighborhoods prior to release to nearby Alameda County Flood Control channels.  This may result in areas not being accessible to the public.  Please use caution when using the park before, during and after heavy rain events and avoid submerged pathways.
