Excessive Heat Warning
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING

The National Weather Service has issued an EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING for Alameda County, effective from 11:00 am Tuesday, July 2nd to 8:00 pm Saturday, July 6th.

What Does This Mean?

An Excessive Heat Warning signifies that temperatures are expected to reach levels significantly higher than average, potentially causing heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These conditions can affect anyone, but the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable.

How to Protect Yourself and Others

To ensure your safety and well-being, please follow these protective actions:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol, as they can lead to dehydration.
  2. Limit Outdoor Activities: Try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade and wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
  3. Use Air Conditioning: Spend time in air-conditioned places. If you do not have air conditioning at home, consider visiting public places such as shopping malls, libraries, or community centers.
  4. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Make sure to check on elderly neighbors, family members, and friends who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Ensure they have access to cool environments and are staying hydrated.
  5. Never Leave Children or Pets in Cars: Temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly, leading to severe heatstroke or death. Always check the backseat before locking your car.
  6. Take Cool Showers or Baths: A cool shower or bath can help lower your body temperature. You can also use a damp cloth on your neck, wrists, and ankles to cool down.

How to Recognize Heat-Related Illnesses

It is crucial to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses and take immediate action if you or someone else exhibits symptoms.

  • Heat Exhaustion: Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale, and clammy skin, a fast/weak pulse, nausea or vomiting, and fainting. Move to a cooler location, drink water, and apply cool, wet cloths to the body.
  • Heat Stroke: Symptoms include a high body temperature (103°F or higher), hot, red, dry, or damp skin, a fast, strong pulse, and possible unconsciousness. Heat stroke is a medical emergency – call 9-1-1 immediately, move the person to a cooler environment, and try to cool them down with water or ice packs.
