Some building permits do not require plans. If you are not sure please contact the Building Inspection office. Some of the common exceptions are:
- Water heater replacements
- Kitchen Remodels (Requires a floor plan layout showing outlets, lighting, air gap, etc.)
- Bathroom Remodels (Requires a floor plan layout showing outlets, lighting, fan, shower door orientation, faucets, etc.)
- Minor electrical work & electrical service upgrades (load calculations may be required)
- Minor plumbing work, re-piping existing residence
- Re-roofing
- Heater and/or air conditioning installations and replacements
- Pest control damage
- Solar Submittals (Not eligible for SolarApp+, require plans but can be submitted to permits@newark.org)
We are happy to announce the City of Newark is adopting SolarAPP+, an automated online application for instantaneous permitting of new residential rooftop solar and storage systems.
Why use SolarAPP+:
- Obtain a permit without needing a full plan diagram
- Lower your costs, including three free revisions
- Expedite installation with instantaneous permit issuance once you've completed the application

All other solar/PV installations require a regular Building Permit.

To apply for a permit please see the following process:
- Complete the Permit Application. Please ensure that the form is completely filled out with all the required information.
- Email the completed permit application to permits@newark.org.
- Staff will review the permit application and enter it into the City’s permit tracking system.
- Once that application is processed, you will be sent an invoice and payment instructions to process payment of the permit fees.
- Note: Applications received prior to 4 PM, may be processed that same working day, however, it can take up to 1 business day. Permit applications received after 4 PM will be processed the following business day.
- Once Finance has notified the applicant that the payment has been processed, Building Inspection will proceed with permit issuance.
- Building Inspection staff will generate the building permit and email it to the applicable party to sign.
- Once the permit is signed, it must be emailed back to the Building Inspection staff for further processing prior to scheduling inspections.
