The City of Newark Public Works Department has begun preliminary engineering for the conceptual design of roadway and drainage improvements within the Birch Street neighborhood.  These conceptual designs are needed along with related cost estimates for neighborhood property owners and the City to make informed decisions about pursuing the potential street improvements. The project will evaluate the feasibility of the following improvements:

  • Roadway pavement reconstruction and rehabilitation

  • New concrete sidewalk, curb, and gutter

  • Storm drain improvements to prevent localized ponding

  • Landscaped-based stormwater treatment measures (i.e. Green Infrastructure)

In addition, the City is partnering with the Alameda County Water District (ACWD) to upgrade and replace aging water main pipes.  The water main replacement will be entirely funded through ACWD’s Capital Improvements Program budget.
