The Street Maintenance Section provides safe and efficient roads for residents of and visitors to the City of Newark. Newark has about 104 centerline miles of streets.
The current Street Maintenance staff sweeps the streets, cleans out the storm drain inlets, patches potholes, maintains all the street signs, repairs park paths, applies various sealants to asphalt, responds to remove hazards from the roadways and assists with special events throughout the year including traffic control for the Newark Day’s Parade.
The Engineering Division of the Public Works Department maintains the Pavement Management Program which tracks the condition rating of all the streets. Maintenance and Engineering collaborate each year to prepare pavement maintenance programs.
